Get the logic right!!
Semester after semester...term test after term test...exam after exam...it's time for students to know how they did in the evaluation exercise. Many students has done well, but some students are actually disturbed by some casual comments that indicated that they have good results because "they are close to Mr Goh".
Actually for me to hear that as a teacher, i regard it as a compliment.
You know, what we do in lectures (magic / games / jokes etc) , tutorials, gatherings, PEM group meetings, LO in PBP, encouraging students to come to our office to ask questions etc etc...is to let the students to get close to us and break the barrier. And what is the ultimate aim of that? To make them understand that we are open and willing to guide and in turn...perhaps make them interested and do well in the studies of course.
This semester is most satisfying in term of my safety results. Why?
As many of you have noticed...I don't have the oppurtunity to take in top students for PBP attachment. They are usually sent to pharama / petrochem multinationals / research based company etc. So no chance to work with the top 25% of the gruop in PBP. My LO companies are just mainly lab testing / water treatment...so I get B/C students usually instead.
Last semester I work with Eliane / James / Huey Shan. I believe I have done my part as a LO to take care of them well and they are happy to work with me also. But when I marked this sem safety papaers...all 3 of them score A. Even more so...Huey Shan is top of the class.
What does that tells me? I want to believe that they are now closer to me...respect me abit more and willng to pay more attention and maybe put in abit of extra effort to do weel in my module. I am proud of them all and yes I agree..maybe it's the closeness to me that make them do well in my module. Who is ashame of that? I'am not.
Similarly, those care n share tutors who have helped me to coach weaker students (this category is clear cut type - they are top students anyway) + my PEM group ...these are also students who are by chance closer to me compared to others ... in return I usually see them do rather well in my modules too...of course there are exceptions...there are ppl who fail too.
While I agree with the above logic...I am not in agreement that anyone suggesting "because they are close to me...I gave them A". It's NOT the same logic.
Just like your father is a male and he has mustache, doen't mean a male with mustache is your father. So get the logic right!!!

I once receive such comments as well, and I told them if you think one can get good result so easily just by getting close with the lecturers, then why don't you get close with them and you need not study anything, and will still get an A. I personally think that by reducing the barrier between students and lecturers is a good way to help students in improving their studies and also allow students to approach lecturers more easily. In Uni, life is hard partly because we don't have that kind of bonds in poly and thus it is not really convenient for us to look for the lecturers. And personally, I feel that Uni lecturers are not 'friendly' enough.

Hahaha...year after yaer n sem after sem I received comments that my 1 st question in my safety commom test really out of the box. Cought afew even good students by surprise too. But it's a good way to test if students do take good care of the materials I gave out and ability to link a few impt things together. :)
I guess we better be abit cool to students in poly as well...just to prepare u better for uni life later ah??
