The FISH! Experience

On course again...!!! This is the last one for the year...more to come next Mar/Sept during school term break.

This is the 1 Day course on the FISH! experience. The whole FISH! concept started in Seattle port, where the 12 fishmongers in a seafood shop named The Pike Place, decided to spice up their routine smelly, boring, hard labour by having fun at work and involve their customers while doing so too.
Their revolutionary movements took the world by storm and now it became the classic life / customer service model. The basic concept of the FISH! model involves 4 fundamental ingridients :

1. PLAY - carry a light heart while u are at work

2. MAKE THEIR DAY - serve others first and make great memories

3. BE THERE - Life is an amazing gift, so be fully present for it (活在当下!)

4. CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE - The fundamental of the 4. Choose n choose wisely. they can be rouchy but they choose to be positive n have fun during work instead.

You can see them in action with this preview link : http://www.videoarts.com/productPreview.do?no=FISH

Will try to see if I can get the library to buy the DVDs...they are really not cheap!!

Then of course there is the sequel to it and called the FISH! Sticks - this is the long term vision part where you need 3 commitments for success :

1. FIND IT - don't bother copying them, you will sure fail !!- For as you are unique and go find what is special about yourself and your business!
2. LIVE IT - No guarentee life will be smooth sailing. When times get tough, have your past vision moments to boost you and get you going.

3. COACH IT - Support each other by coaching and affirming.

---------------
FISH! FOOD - regular serving of these nutrients will sustain you a long long time!!

1. Inspiration - what inspires you?

2. Innovation - constantly looking ways to improve?

3. Gratitude - be greatful for what you have!!

-----------------------------

Quotable quotes: " Definition of success : You love what you are doing so much so that you are willing to do it for free. But the fact that you do it so well, people are willing to pay you do what you do!!" Cool!

----------------------------

I decided to apply what I learn immediately. Cos the multi-colour napkin rose has just arrived from USA into the CCK post office last night. So during lunch I decide to skip the meal and drive to CCK to collect the parcel. Then I went back to SIM and start asking the female classmates their favourite colour and fold the napkin rose for them.

This took many of them by surprise and this move sure make their day. One also immediately apply what she learnt and wrote me an appreciation card to let me know.

---------------------------------

I think I am basically a rather FISH!y person even before the course. But to see there are actually many ppl out there doing the same thing and such actions are deemed desirable and recognised is very fullfilling.

Things to do after this course:

1. When sending out small gifts during lecture , I shall follow what the fishmongers do -

" 1 highlighter going to Tan Ah Beng!!!"

2. Put sign on door to declare your attitude. Haven't really decided the slogan yet.... maybe:

" Beare!! FISH!y person at work!!" those who are aware of FISH! will understand.

3. 1 lunch out with fellow colleague per month - already doing this with the DTs/TSOs. perhaps should do so for the lecturers kakis.

4. No use coupon board? where ppl put their coupons / vouchers on the board so thers may have use for it

5. Make his day !! - creat Yi Fan's MSN messenger in Oct
6. Make her day!! - I believe Maryam will be thrilled to see the new product of multi-coloured napkins. Called her and made an appointemnt with her after the term test to drop by NYP to collect a box.

7. make her day!! - to order tupperwear for my wife - discount or no discount.

Dear readers - are you FISH!ed??

Buzan Memory Workshop / Steelers outing @NYP P4

Glad to see so many of the past graduates turn up for this fun workshop. Some of them actually have very good memory ...like watermelon...so i think she come for the sweets...but she forgot to look through the graduation CD!!!

I think we have a fun hour together learning,. After the lesson we try recalling the 20 ltems and I believe most have no problem getting it all correct. Can easily double the images and go for 40 items without any difficulty.
It's now 9pm in the evening, exactly 9 hours after the workshop...and I now will again recall the 20 items using the image linking technique:
1) Bun - Cow (think beef burger)
2) shoe - Calibration (shoe scale below)
3) Tree - Jurong Island (which absolutely dun have any tree)
4) Door - NanYang (Capital / colour)
5) Hive - paper (Ah han waving)
6) Stick - Elina (Liang po po)
7) heaven - apple (your death present)
8) gate - Dollfie (poor thing)
9) Vine - Sailormoon (which one??)
10 ) hen - mooncake (quadraple yoke!!)
11) chopsticks - fountain (yummy yummy)
12) Swan - fondue (cheese - yellow type)
13) heart - chocolate (this is easy)
14) Yatch - pudding (food..food..more food)
15) Hook - Big Bird (not me not me)
16) Eleohant trunck - pamelo (look out!!)
17) Cliff - latern (dead at 95!!)
18) snowman - Ci Xi!! (this one really fuuny to imagine)
19) Flag - Dim Sum (lai oh lai oh - sarah )
20) Donut - Kang Xi ( so easy - what about next 20?)

seriously the images are as vivid and fresh as per the time in P405...this is how our brain function!!!
Then we have subway lunch and played settlers / dice. Haiz..today not so lucky...ate 4 jellues. Also happy to train another few settlers players among us. :)
Now please let me know your frank opinion on the workshop?? Appreciate your comments.

TONY BUZAN on Memory

Sign up for this 1 Day course to improve my fading memory. Lao Liao. :)

I originally thought that it will be delievered by one of the certified trainers. I am really excited to know when arrived at SIM that the course is personally delivered by the MIND MAPS guru - TONY BUZAN!!
Yes it is a powerpact 1 day course. Before the course starts, we did a memory test and i score only 9/29...fail. After that...my score is 29/29...ha!!! what is best..that I now understand how info get retain in our mind and also learnt the systematic ways to memorise up to 20 items...in sequence too!!! You can test me in middle...reverse...skip...it doesn't matter...I will recall!! :)

This is the MEMORY graph...Tony says this is the graph that will change your life. I guess we are all suconciously using this graph without knowing it...patially. Now that I know in full...it will of course works better for me to learn / teach.

Then of course there is the reverse...the forgetting curve!!

Now I an seriuosly considering to use my 1st hour 2nd year RS lecture time to go through these curves with the students. It will be so beneficial for those who want to learn / study properly and retain info fast n long but not knowing the proper techniques. Waiting for them to reach 3rd yr maybe be abit too late. (well it will never be too late as long as they willinh too learn actually).

Summarise below are some of the very very important pointers that goes along with the delivery:

When taking notes -

1. use C O L O U R !!! (BIG BRIGHT COLOURS!!!)

2. add sketches / symbols / codes.

3. Vary your font size to emphasize too.

4. use lines / arrows to link / connect ideas/ concepts

5. highlight the critical info

All these are vital to sink in the ideas into our memory. Once done...it is actually a MIND MAP!!

Making things BIG / Different / outstanding / so that it can be easily reembered is call the Van Restroff effect.

To enhace the retention : MUST use Association + Imagination

PPl remember the starting part : Primacy effect (1st) and also remember the last things - Recency effect. so intro / summary are extremly important.

Take B . R . E . A . K . S during study!!! (it actually creat more recency / primacy).

If train properly, memory actually gets better when you are older. (world best memroy champion is actually 46 yr old)

When leave people...always leave on a HIGH!!!...so that u have a good memory and looking foreward to meet again.

Make your life Memorable!!! Make your like exciting!!! make your life Colourful!!! Learn new things!!! in that way your mind is always under Van restroff's effect state!!

DO NOT TRY TO REMEMBER - Instead : RE-VIEW / RE-VISION (Try to see the picture / visualise instead!!)

STM into LTM = 5 x R (To transfer short term memory to long term memory - need to repeatedly visualise 5 time)

Healthy body - healthy memory!!

Worse case scenario : Dis-interested. Why? Because that means U dun visualise / remember...next time u see and u get frustrated...anti new info...disconnected...then u say because U are old...no use...then U feel down and every things spirial downwards!!!!

Instead Revise / review (time spent actually getting v short!!). U can imagine the mind map even it's not there and U can even connect new things as U gain more knowledge and U feel good!! Spirial UPWARDS instead!!

Anyone interested in momorizing 20 items withoput fails?...just a try if the stsyem works on u...

Tony 2008 visits to SIM has been fixed, i have mark down in my calender the courses i would like to join next Sept break. :) care to join me? It's definitely worth my time and my life!!!

2007 S1 GHH Book Prize Wiiners

Manage to get hold of them during their NE lessons before they disappear to CPTC and attchment. There are 4 winners this semester.

Betty is all rounded, consistent in all category in her performance. Andre scored 100 in his VIVA (95 for the QnA and 5 bonus points in the tutorial puzzle). Soo Hua did well in her lab reports and also scord 100 in VIVA...though she opt for DEAL in the VIVA. Siow Cheng also DEAL in VIVA and did well in the final exam.

QH actually scored the highest in the final exam...but his hand writing is one of the worst i ever come across...so that cost him very dearly in the lab reports...and he dare not come for the VIVA QnA to boost his score. so he missed out the book prize by a small fraction. Really hope he will improve his handwritting .

Farewell this batch of students....some may work with me but I won't see most of them anymore till 5 months later when they are back for PBP presentation...b4 they graduate.

Week of various outings / gathering

It was really a very busy yet happy last few days...for many of us. Exams are over, BBQ / chalet outings are in. After marking the papers, it's good to relax and meet up with them outside the school. Arranged a karaoke singnig session for the final yr students in Chinatown...sing from 2-6pm. I realised that this particuar batch of students can really go wild when singing. Split into 3 rooms and each have their own gang to be comfortable with. In the end me and Allen have to "run table" to entertain all of them seperately...but the good thing is that we don't have to queue to sing songs...hahahaha.

Then next outing is to go Pasir Ris chalet to join the Cp505 group for breakfast and played the dice games. Too little time to teach them Settlers. Instead we try to finish the drinks and my jellies. The jelly taste sooo good that even some volunteered to lose...maybe next time need to use a different forfeit for this crazy group le.

Then it's time to meet up with my 6 PbP attachemnt students for report / presentation briefings. Met them at West Mall coffee beans and talked for about 90 mins. then when all questions / doubts are answered, we proceed to E-zone and played the tank battle games / racing and other arcade games too. Hope they are now more settled and confident about the whole event.

Nantiaah and Nurul came along too. They are under the different care of a different LO so I did my part as a PEM to brief them accordingly sothat they wont lose out in the preparation of the big event.

Then it's the visit of the NTU grads in CBC. Smart students...use 1 piece of choc to exchange for many many things in my couborad in return. they had some misunderstandings with their senior and I feel that i was a contributing factor too. Really wish they will patch up and continue the linkage with their senior next year.

Then it's the farewell of San. Wish her all the best in her future....I have failed to convince her to speak out more in PBP, failed to convince her to come for DnD, failed to convince her to come for VIVA, and now finally failed to convince her to stay longer to experince the real exposure as a DT.

We wenton to redeemed some durian mooncake as desserts. Each has 2 and play game to decide who eat the rest of 3. Finally got San to eat!!!

Then came YH / Peiling / Kim / Pauling / Tianlin / Xi Min...dropping by to say happy teachers' day with their chocs / papa cream puffs. Feel really bad forgot to take a pict with them.

Then finally it's the dinner with SLnSL/LL/CY/WE/SH. They bought me durians!!!! (plus a thumbdrive from WE.) Thanks very much. We had a good time play dice and watching ppl eating jellies. set a date on 27 sept for them to come back NYP to have 1/2 day fun again.
