CPT DnD '08

This year graduating class DnD come really fast...so fast that they are celebrating before knowing their final semester results. In the end it turns out to be a good excuse to joke to them saying : "are u aure u pass?". For 1 or 2 students...it it is not a joking matter.


I guess it must be the guys idea to have it so early, no one wants to come for DnD with a Botak head.



It also coincides with my son's CA test week. The next day (today) is the Science CA so I have to fullfill my primary role as a science tutor at home 1st. For for awhile I really don't know how soon can I reach the ballroom. Have a stack of 6 assessment books to go through with him...luckily the topics are my favourite suject - reproduction. After 3 hours of show n tell, finally finished at 8.45pm and while my wife is looking for last year P4 assessments ... i sneak out of the house without saying goodbye. If not I will never make it to town.


I was actually on MSN chatting with CX the night b4 too, by chance. I always has the impression that she was a girls with few words. And in the end I think I am worng about her. She spent 30 mins on a "debate" with me why I really must go DnD...

When I was there they were already doing the lucky draw!! And guess who won the 1st prize? Since the DD picked him, i guess he deserve to take a picture with him as well.


It was nice that the students gave each lecturer who thought them in the 3rd year and presented each a token. There are the most big and beautiful award / mothor of mother liquor award / Ali Baba award / HaLo3 award / Nafa Nag award. And I got this. Er...but I AM a millionaire!!! (okok...not cash but CPF / house / car / magic tricks / sweets all inclusive).





As usual, when dinner and lucky draw finished, the dance started..it's time for the staff to excuse ourselves to head home. Luckily manage to get everyone together for a picture b4 all disperse.

My PEM 0501. Next year I will have a new pEM 0803...hope that they are equally as good the the outgoing ones.

Many many other pictures taken, really cannot show all. But I pick this one...call it the "Almost cannot recognise award" picture.

Last but not least...calling all camera owners...if you wish, please send your DnD photos album (those you don't mind sharing) to me or Mr Luda via a CD, we will in turn compile it into a DVD collection and distribute them in the graduation. The contributors will gurenteed a copy of DVD.

Oh...finally I hope they enjoy my 10 mins pictures movies too. See you guys on Graduation Day May 21!!!

Graduation CD 2008

Dear 3rd year students who are about to graduate,

Good news!! the design of this year Graduation CD is now decided and we (myself and Christof) will start the production soon. Aim is to finish the production by May...which is your graduation day!! This involves printing /drying / editing / mass copy of the CDs. It will take awhile to complete.

I hope to pass the CD personally to you on that day so please do come for your graduation and look for me don't be late.

Also happy to see that Christof's involvement in the Graduation CD production has been gradually increasing year by year. Year 2006 he helps to print the CDs, year 2007 he helps to design, and this year he even wanted to contribute more on the photos content as he has a PEM group graduating too.

I am still not 100% finalised on the CD content...still working on them. need to step up the effort abit now...

As per usual as in least years, we print 50 copies only. So if you wish to have a copy, pls register in my blog. 1st come 1st serve!!!!

07S2 GHH Book prize Winners

After a couple of days of trying, finally managed to get the 4 to come to visit me together. Not an easy task as they are now finished with their final year exams so all are trying to enjoy their hard earned holidays to the fullest.

XN / YX are the expected winners ...they have done well doing well in all aspects of the safety module. GW is the 1st one who told me there is a minor error in the self-mark spreadsheet...so bonus for him. Chir extra kia su lab report is the main reason why she got the book prize.

3 of them chose Rules of Life as their reward excpet YX wanted to be different -he wanted the Rules of Work instead. Sorry no Rules of Wealth this semester....students all like this $$$ book!! Need to replanish stock soon!!

Also managed to locate my PBP students during lunch break and took a picture with them together. Don't think can ever have a chance to see them dress so smartly again. I am very lucky to be able to work with them this semester...very hard working students and never gave me any trouble...PH and Isaiah even broke record for the company supervisor feedback. how the next batch going to better than them i really wonder.

This semester is also very hectic for me...In the past I just do 2 powerpoint reviews and 1 report review with my students, then this semester even increase the effort further to 1 to 2 mock presentation reviews also. Really tiring.

On top of that I also take in extra students whom they need help cos LO is not free.

But i am glad that the effort paid off nicely as they are in the end praised by the assessor in the other room for their good work. I do hope all of you carry the pointers given to you along and be a better presenter later in your life. Good Luck!!

07S2 safety paper

Its time for the final year safety exam again!! Usually it's also the last exam for the final year students. Every semester when I set up the preperations, I need to go thorugh 4 rounds of distribution : -

Round 1 : - Question papers
round 2 : - Answer booklet
Round 3 : - Reference sheet
Round 4 : - Energy booster - Mentos!! (99% of the students took them so I guess they accepted it as a positive input).



However, I also took notice of what is left on the table after students have submitted their paper. This is what I found on some of the students's table :-



There are 5 of them who did that this sem. Perhaps these are the same students who regularly litter the LT after lectures as well...now I finally know who are they.

Only student 40 came back as he was told i was looking for No 40. When he ask me what's the issue and I told him he have left something on the table. He replied rather quickly and say "No nothing!!" and I reminded him again with exactly the same statment. Only after afew seconds of staring hard at the table top finally he realised what I was talking about. Finally he took them away with him.

The other 4 was not so lucky. They lost something in the process.

I played a couple of tricks in the exam question this year...one of them is the human response to current flow. I discussed with them in the lecture b4 that it only needs mA to kill one. They laughed at their seniors as they were trick by me last year as I removed the milli- sign. So this year when they see the milli - sign many of them thought I go back onto the right track, only to realised that I changed the A to a V after the milli. One even writes 1 mV = 1 mA.



so like i say in my lecture :- those who write die / die / die will die / die /die.



It is also very difficult to accept that these were the answers given by a 3rd year CPT students in the final exam. Something really went wrong somewhere...

And there was this answer I see, I think the student really try to pull a fast one on me...Hoping that it will not read carefully...

超级星光大道

One of the TV shows I enjoyed watching in the evening with my wife is the Taiwanese Singing competition show, SuperSG. In the season 1 from the road from Top 10 to the Grand Final, we sat and watch and try to predict who will be out next round. It was the time I get to know the song "你是我的眼". It has been quite awhile since my last job that i was touched by a song and that night I remember I was listening to that song via BaiDu and trying to sing along the whole evening. (Older and without practise and shouting in lecture everyday...my standard has really dropped drastically).

My favourite part of the show is actually listen to the comments of the judges (just like Superday show judge 黄舒骏). And it has really ben an eye opener to hear what the judges actually want from the singer when it comes to a certain minimum level. No longer at this stage, completing a song without a miss-key and without forgetting the lyrics is considered perfect!! Many occasions, I remembered, that the judges told the singer - you must sing with your heart and try to touch us!!

I must admit this has somehow affected me lately and I am not sure it is a good or bad thing for the coming batch of Pbp students coming back from attachment to make their final presentation. For the past 1 week I was working with them on their powerpoint slides drafts, and finally to their 1st take of their mock presentation. Maybe they are still nervous and unprepared and amybe I was expecting too much from them as a 1st take....they really have lot to improve, so much to tell them. (They present for 10 minutes and I spend 30 mins pointing out obvious improvement area to them...I actually loogi alot!!)

Just want to say that it strikes me that the coming PBP presentation is like the SuperSG for the students...all wanted to do well, all have put in quite alot of effort, and some of course, are better prepared than the other in the end. Some just have better talent, some stands out by putting more effort via practise, practise, practise. We will judge you using a higher standard...just to let you know where you can actually improve...before you make the same mistakes again in front of other people in the industry. Comments we make may not be music to your ears...but remember these are the pinters that will make you a better presenter...if you want to be that is.

I expect many students will complete the presentation without forgetting the lyrics, those who can do that can already get quite high marks. Some may even sing off-keys, some choose the wrong song totally. They have to settle for 2nd best....

But really it will be great to spot someone who can come up and present the 10 minutes show "with your heart" and touched the audience. You dun get too many of these gems...I keep on using student B as an exapmle last semster as an example. Her statement "Almost send GHH to GH" was a stroke of genius and successfully turn the awkard situation arund and using humor in the process too!!

2008 CNY Gathering

This is the Main Event for me in every CNY. Time for reunion with some graduates and also time for sharing and fun too!!

First to arrive is the Magnificent 7. HY receive my "Need help" MSN nick and managed to get other 3 to drop in early. Also the only 3 visiting last year graduates from 040x happened to arrive on the dot too. They are the ones that help to perform cheap labour but got bouble red packets.


Soon arriving is 5 of my graduating 0501 PEM + JL.


My 1st PEM 0301with 0304 are the 2 classes closest to me in that year. They manage to arrive next and good to see there are still quite alot of them coming. Aishah, Daniel, TL and Wiro came abit late and missed the group photo.



The big brothers and sisters of all - (pioneer batch) - thanks to Ah Meng, contact this year manage to have 4 of them visiting. Hopefully the number will grow more next year.





Every year without fail the graduating class turnout is the best. This also they also form the bulk of the visitors and also eat the most food. With some dice on the table, that is enough to get them high and go on auto destruction on any food placed on the table. Must really get them back again next year, if not i really have problem to solve to extra food issue.



Of course this is nothing comapred to Edison's web pictures, but still considered very hot picture in my blog already. Thanks HY and San for the sporting picture.

I looked up and down afew times but cannot see their registration...They are actually my DnD debtors with a bodyguard.

Below are the musical chairs winners from the gents and ladies division. Lightning butts rules!!

Also there are other winners in Zhong Ji Mi Ma - Andre is the big winner, Betty missed it by a whisker (by 1 number! in the 1st call!!) . Ther there is also the biggest IC and smallest IC numbers winners. So there are plenty of chances to win more angpoas. Hope that all are happy with their takings.

Those who stay back late enough will have a chance to meet up with the guest of honour - Mr Luda who rush back all the way from malacca.

Consider it was on a the 2nd day of CNY, i think to be able to get 60 of you to drop by to visit still, I think it was quite a successful and joyous gathering. I had fun myself, and i hope all of you enjoyed the time spent with me too.

Let me know what's in your mind and maybe i can improve next year gathering abit more. :)

Mini CNY union Lunch at ChinaTown

It's the 29th of 12th month - day b4 CNY eve....DT A and PY are both roaring to travel back to their home for CNY gathering / reunion. So both will actually miss my CNY gathering.

DT A will feast for the next 2 weeks with family and put on at least another 5 kg and PY actually going to Taiwan for a 7 day tour!! So I guess they will enjoy themselves a lot during the next 2 weeks.

Decided to go for a good meal just for the sake of CNY. Never tried this 谭家鲍鱼盆菜 b4...so why not give it a try. Managed to gather 2 cars of colleague who willing to lunch out with me and have a mini union lunch together.

Funny thing is...the dept is growing yet the number to times we lunch out as a group is getting more difficult. We somehow develope various lunching habits and pattern so actually the staff eat in small circles at various locations.

I am trying to have a little bit of CNY mood and also it's nice to have meal with some colleagues whom you work with but no time to eat together during the term. The number should be abit bigger ideally but size of resturant and transport and staff availability and meal prefrence become a burden to please all. In the end we just stop at 2 cars and go marrily.

Is the meal good? Yes not bad - although the albalone is small than we expected, much smaller! hahahahaah. Worth the money? - It's NOT about money we go for this CNY gathering meal.

After the lunch we continue for desserts. Walk 15 mins to help consumed the energy we just intake. Just to put in more suger into our body again. but it's very tempting so I even packet more for my family. Never tried 双奶皮 b4...actually taste good when chilled. Will try the hot version next time.

07S2 POO CCA

This semester I only teaches 2 classes of the Safety tutorial groups. As usual I announced to them about the no attendance taking / no marks given / non exam related POO CCA during the 2nd last Lab.

Good to see B2 is rather sporting and about 12 turn up for the exercise. Student C, who is my all time worst memory student, is the only 1 turn up for B1 (I think she must have got the dates mixed up actually).

Many of the rest are simply too concerned about the coming term tests on the Fridays and would rather concentrate on the acadamic performance effort.

DT PY was asked to join in as well, as she also missed it in her last year study. (She said she was on MC). She can easily double up as our photographer and assistant during that session too.

I think we had a good work out...giggles and laughters from RnD.


It's always good to see students who are more willing to learn life skills. There are so many little things we do not have time to impart during the lecture and this CCA is so fun, simple yet powerful to bring across some very important message in trems of working / learning attitude.

I do hope they find that the 45 mins spent on the 4 Ball juggling CCA is worth the time. And very surprisingly, they are actually the 1st group that applies what they have leart straight away into real life.

"THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY TO TAKE GROUP PICTURES!!!!"

So we end up walking a short distance across to the Eco-garden for a much better shot. And I will always remember this picture. Hope they will continue to apply what they have learnt that day.
